Night Gallery Presents:
Transtextuality (SB 48)

KATIE HERZOG
thru August 3, 2013

It is an overwhelming experience to enter the installation of forty-eight tightly cropped portrait paintings of transgender men and women that makes up Katie Herzog’s solo exhibition Transtextuality (SB 48).

Herzog brings together her painting practice and training in library and information science to reimagine Richter’s gesture in the wake of California’s Senate Bill 48, which passed in 2011, requiring social studies curricula to include LGBT figures. Her visual archive of mostly living trans leaders, from Susan Stryker to Lana Wachowski (and many lesser-knowns in between), provides a welcome education.

For the feat of Herzog’s deeply humanistic project is to demonstrate that these transgendered men and women, above all, identify with their intellectual achievements.

I Want That Inside Me
GalleristNY Exhibition Review

Despite its title, and with the exception of Jared Buckhiester’s watercolor typology of half-naked football players and one magisterially constructed, transparently explicit Tom of Finland sketch, none of the work in this taut summer grouping of obsessive drawing and collage is particularly concerned with evasion or desire—except insofar as anything can be an evasion, and everything, once you’re looking for it, is desire.

Keep Your Timber Limber
London Evening Standard Exhibition Review

TOM OF FINLAND

From the Forties, Touko Laaksonen, known as Tom of Finland, created his images of the sexual exploits of musclebound uniform-clad men as fantasies for himself but what began as personal porn became celebrated in the gay community and more widely because they showed what Laaksonen described as “proud men having happy sex”.

The Benefits Of Pencil Hard-ons
Exhibition: Tom of Finland: Preliminary Drawings

TOM OF FINLAND

There is little to say of the content – veiny, glutear, wild – which hasn’t been written already, although the delicacy of these preliminary pieces is truly remarkable; the carefulness and the softness is surprising, and delightful in its incongruity. If you feel as though you’d benefit from some close-quarters scrutiny of beautifully rendered pencil hard-ons, it runs until August 10th.

Tom of Finland –
Life and Work of a Gay Hero

“I spent every day in a hectic office trying to create something unique for an ad; then the evenings and the weekends I spent drawing my private fantasies. Sometimes I’d work the whole night through and complete two or three drawings.”
