Olipas huippu ja yllättävät Kuplit!

There are great responsibilities for us that are entrusted to carry forward the legacy of a great man. Solja Järvenpää has handled her important role with enormous spirit, enthusiasm and fortitude. In doing so, she has garnered the respect and appreciation of many for her insightful hand in directing the heritage of Touko Laaksonen, the artist Tom of Finland.

Tom of Finland is a national treasure. Solja, a sparkling jewel.

Be it always remembered that it was Solja that suggested to TOM’s Foundation – Tom of Finland Foundation – that we apply for a Finnish postage stamp. We all know what glory that has bestowed on the master artist and the brilliant light it shines both on Finland and the entire LGBT world community.

Now They Are Also
Award Winning Stamps

The Tom of Finland stamps received a great honor from the Association of the Visual Communication Designers of Finland GRAFIA. They hold an annual competition for the best communications and design projects in Finland. This year the stamps received the Kultahuippu award (The Golden Peak) at the awards gala.

Congratulations to Tom of Finland Foundation’s Susanna Luoto and BOTH’s Timo Berry for exemplary work. A nation is proud and Touko certainly would be as well.

Artist-In-Residence:
Mies Mikkonen

Mies Mikkonen is part of Tom of Finland Foundation’s Artist-in-Residence program. In 2011, he made a documentary about Tom of Finland.

I’m interested in creating metaphysical works where the laws of the imagination triumph over the laws of reality. I believe that art is still something that we don’t understand at all and something that probably has been very ill-defined in the past, mostly by art critics and theoreticians, whose minds are in a prison of academic rigidity. Starting from film school I’ve made movies with both fiction and documentary approaches. I’ve also taught and lectured on film, and I’m a regular writer for the Finnish exploitation/arthouse film publication Elitisti.

Michael Broderick Is Interviewed By Gregg Shapiro for ChicagoPride.com
Drawn To It

Gregg Shapiro: When did you first discover that you had a talent for drawing?

Michael Broderick: I’ve been drawing since I was a kid; literally since I could hold a crayon, but I didn’t realize I could draw erotica until college (in the early ‘90s). I saw the work of Tom of Finland and wondered, “Could I do that?”

GS: What artists and illustrators do you consider to be inspirations?

MB: Goodness (there are) so many! The ones that leap to mind are Tom of Finland, of course. But also J.C. Leyendecker (his work taught me a lot about making men handsome), Frank Frazetta, Alberto Vargas and Alphonse Mucha; all dead. If we look toward the living, Hajime Sorayama and the very much alive Robert W. Richards have been terrific inspirations. Their work is an instruction on so many levels; line, color, attitude. Amazing!

Same-Sex Marriage In Finland Means
Standing Up To Russia

Finland and Russia are next door neighbours and have a long shared history. But when it comes to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, the two countries are worlds apart.

Finland has often sought to placate Russia over the years by allowing it to influence internal politics, but it is now taking a bold step. Following a parliamentary vote in November 2014, it looks like same-sex marriage will soon be legal in Finland – whether its neighbour likes it or not.
